Opposition parties Saturday attacked the government on rising prices with the BJP going to the extent of asking it not to raise "false hopes" among the people.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Prakash Javdekar questioned the government's optimism on the economy benefiting from a good monsoon this season.

"How can you benefit all of a sudden from the monsoon. There are states in the eastern parts which have had floods. Don't give false hopes," he said in the Rajya Sabha during a discussion on price rise.

"You are transforming special economic zones into real estate, how will exports and manufacturing increase. Exports increase only when countries innovate," he added.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) member Prasanta Chatterjee said prices have risen all-round.

Trinamool Congress member Sukhendu Shekhar Roy raised the issue of the huge debt burden of West Bengal.

Communist Party of India's D. Raja said the economic crisis and the depreciation of the rupee are the results of the policies pursued by the government. "Unless the government reviews these polices and undertakes course correction, the economy cannot be saved and I do not see any hope for the revival of the economy," he said.

N.K. Singh of the Janata Dal (United) said: "Parliament should have an opportunity to review the 12th five-year plan".
