Outgoing Meghalaya governor eyes politics

Outgoing Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary Tuesday dropped hints of plunging into electoral politics.

"Well, there is every possibility that I will be joining politics," Mooshahary told IANS, a day after President Pranab Mukherjee announced Krishan Kant Paul as the next occupant of Raj Bhavan in Shillong.

He added: "There is also a possibility that I am going to contest (next year's Lok Sabha elections). But it will depend on several other factors."

He did not reveal the name of the political party he would associate himself with ahead of the 2014 parliamentary elections.

Mooshahary, the first tribal Indian Police Service officer who headed the National Security Guard and the Border Security Force, assumed the office of governor July 1, 2008.

He was the first person from an indigenous community to become governor of this predominantly tribal state and the only non-politician ever from the northeast to hold the constitutional office.
