Over 4,800 dead in Syrian conflict in August

Cairo, Sep 1 (IANS/EFE) At least 4,830 people were killed in Syria in August, whether by the government's shelling, the US-led international coalition raids, Islamic State attacks or clashes, the Syrian Observatory for Human Right said on Tuesday.

Among the casualties, there were at least 1,205 civilians, including 252 children and 151 women, while 913 people lost their lives in attacks launched by the government.

Moreover, 43 people were killed by the international coalition airstrikes, 32 executed by IS militants, while 55 died of torture in detention centres and in barracks of the regime's security forces.

A total of 162 people were killed by shelling carried out by jihadists, rebel brigades, Kurdish militiamen or the Al Nusra Front, an affiliate of Al Qaeda in Syria.

Additionally, 885 people belong to Islamist armed insurgent or opposition groups or Syrian Kurdish fighters were killed in the same month.

In July, the number of deaths in the civil war as recorded by the Observatory was 4,831 people, while May was the month of the highest number of deaths at 6,657.

At least 230,000 people have died in Syria since the beginning of the civil war in March 2011, according to the report.
