This was Bopanna's best ever outing at the Wimbledon, having reached the quarter-final previously in 2010.
Meanwhile on Court No.2, fourth seeded veterans Paes with Czech partner Radek Stepanek also lost a five-setter to Croat-Brazilian pairing Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo. The 12th seeds won 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 55 minutes.
