Amid soaring tensions with Israel, restive Palestinian protestors have torched a Jewish holy site in the West Bank city of Nablus, authorities said on Friday.
A statement issued by the Israeli army said dozens of Palestinians set fire to Joseph's Tomb on Thursday night after which Palestinian security forces arrived at the site, contained the fire and dispersed the perpetrators, EFE news reported.
"The burning and desecration of Joseph's Tomb last night (Thursday night) is a blatant violation and contradiction of the basic value of freedom of worship," Israeli Defence Force spokesman Peter Lerner said.
"The IDF will take all measures to bring the perpetrators of this despicable act to justice, restore the site to its previous condition and ensure that the freedom of worship returns to Joseph's Tomb," Lerner added.
Joseph's Tomb has been venerated for centuries by Christians, Jews and Muslims.
There have been near-daily stabbings by Palestinians of Israelis this month, as violence between the two sides spirals.
Seven Israelis have been killed and dozens wounded in stabbings and shootings. At least 30 Palestinians, including several of the attackers, have also been killed in the growing unrest.
