To commemorate four years of the heinous December 16 gang rape incident in Delhi, Nirbhaya's parents, along with many others, on Thursday gathered at Rajghat to pay tribute to their daughter.
The parents of the rape victim are demanding justice for their daughter, as the tormentors of their daughter are yet to be hanged.
"No one has taken any lesson in these four years. The laws have been changed, but how many criminals have been brought to justice? I don't think there are many," Asha Devi, mother of the December 16 rape victim, told the media.
"Our society hasn't learned anything. I haven't been idle during these years even for one moment and have been struggling to get justice for my daughter and others like her," she added.
She also blamed the central government for not utilising the Rs 200-crore Nirbhaya Fund, earmarked to compensate the victims of sexual assault, effectively.
The meet did not have any political figures, but was attended by activist Yogita Bhayana from Uttarakhand National Commission of Women (NCW), and people who have continuously fought for justice for Nirbhaya.
On December 16, 2012, the 23-year-old physiotherapist was gang-raped by six men, including one juvenile, in a moving bus and later succumbed to her injuries. This triggered protests across the nation and she was also mourned the world over.
She came to be known as 'Nirbhaya' for her astonishing zeal to live despite grave injuries inflicted upon her.
