One prisoner was killed and seven were injured in a jailbreak attempt in Myanmar, state media reported Sunday.

The incident occurred in Kawthoung, a town in the southeastern Kayin state bordering Thailand, over the last two days, Xinhua cited the New Light of Myanmar daily as saying.

Prison authorities foiled the attempt and no one could escape from the jail.

Taking advantage of a quarrel between some prisoners, some inmates sparked an unrest, set fire to the corridors and attempted to break out through the roof.
