The union home ministry Monday rejected a proposal of Delhi Police for recruiting about 2,000 personnel for security at the Metro railway stations in the national capital, an official said.

"There is a total ban on creation of any post, so it can not be considered," said the rejection letter issued to the Delhi Police, according to the official.

Eight police stations with a strength of 202 personnel look after the security of 129 Metro stations across Delhi. The police stations are at Kashmere Gate, Shastri Park, Rithala, Raja Garden, Qutab Minar, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Yamuna Bank and Kalkaji Mandir Metro stations.

The proposal to increase the staff was sent in 2012 from the Delhi Police headquarter, the official said.

Besides the Delhi Police, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has 5,000 personnel, including 800 female personnel, at Delhi Metro stations for frisking and checking.

The Delhi Police had sought permission for recruiting 24 inspectors, 63 sub-inspectors, 130 assistant sub-inspectors, 613 head constables and 1,164 constables for the Metro stations. They were waiting to get the nod.

In 2012, the Metro police stations registered 291 criminal cases.
