The use of public toilets in the national capital increased 431 per cent in 2018-19 over 2016-17, with over 2.93 lakh people provided access to the Jan Suvidha Complex (public toilets), the Delhi government claimed in its Outcome Budget 2018-19.
According to the second Outcome Budget for 2018-19, up to December 31, tabled by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the Assembly on Monday, the Urban Development Department has built 23 Jan Suvidha Complexes and 1,041 toilet seats in 2018, which benefited 2.93 lakh people against 2.57 lakh people in 2017-18.
"Against a target of establishing 241 toilet complexes in 2018-19 to reduce open defecation, 229 such complexes were opened till December," Sisodia said.
As per the data shared by Sisodia, the number of such complexes increased from 77 in 2017 to 206 in 2017-18 and 2,93,385 people were provided access to toilets in 2018-19, an increase of 431 per cent over 2016-17.
On the AAP government's effort for providing shelter to homeless, Sisodia said against the target of establishing 200 night shelters in 2018-19, 199 were started till December 2018.
The average number of occupants in the night shelters per day is 12,030, an increase of 9 per cent over 2016-17, when there were 192 such shelters in the city.
"The number of average occupants per day in 199 permanent night shelters were 12,030 up to December 2018 against the target of 14,500 people," Sisodia said.
