Punjab to set up authority to monitor private varsities

The Punjab government will constitute a regulatory authority to monitor the activities of private universities and other institutions in the state, a state government spokesman said here on Friday.

Higher Education and Languages Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra has instructed the education department to take steps for constituting a regulatory authority to monitor the working of private universities, the spokesman said.

Rakhra said a meeting should be convened immediately to prepare the draft of the regulatory authority and discuss each and every aspect minutely.

He said the Punjab government was committed to the welfare of the students and their exploitation by the private universities would not be tolerated.
