Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday condoled the death of a 22-year-old Kashmiri Army officer and said "those who tried to defeat what he stood for will be defeated".
Militants abducted and killed Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz when he had gone to attend a family wedding in Shopian district. His bullet-riddled body was found on Wednesday.
"His memory will never be forgotten. Those who tried to defeat what he stood for, will themselves be defeated," Gandhi said on his official Twitter account.
"The entire nation shares the grief of Lt Ummer Fayaz's family, friends and colleagues. My heartfelt condolences," he added.
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has called it an act of cowardice and the Army has vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
