Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying the "chowkidar" (watchman) was protecting the interests of tycoons Anil Ambani and Gautam Adani.

"Anil Ambani opened his defence company 10 days before the world's biggest defence deal for Rafale aircraft between India and France was signed. Modi took away possible jobs from the youth of Karnataka, if HAL would have got the deal, and instead gave the money to his friend," Gandhi said at a rally here, about 600 kilometre northwest of Bengaluru.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Alok Verma was removed from his post when questions were raised on the Rafale fighter deal, he alleged.

"Soon after the chowkidar was caught stealing, he made the whole country chowkidars. We know chowkidar is the chor (thief), but now Modi wants everyone to be a chowkidar," " the party chief said targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party's recent "Main bhi chowkidar hun" campaign.
