Rain causes waterlogging, traffic snarls

Monsoon showers on Monday led to waterlogging in several areas of the national capital and traffic jams across the city. The weather office has predicted light rain on Tuesday.

"It will be generally cloudy sky on Tuesday. Ligh rain or drizzle may occur at many places in the region," an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official told IANS.

Moderate rains were reported in almost every area of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday.

"The city has received 14.1 mm rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m. on Monday," the official said.

The weather office said that Monday's maximum temperature settled at 32.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 32 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively on Tuesday, the weather office said.

Monday's minimum temperature was recorded at 26.4 degrees Celsius, one notch below the season's average, while the relative humidity oscillated between 77 and 97 per cent.

Sunday's maximum temperature settled at 31.3 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average while the minimum was 26.0 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average.

Though the showers made the weather pleasant, it derailed traffic movement across several stretches in the city. Commuters had a tough time reaching their destinations.

The rains resulted in water-logging in various areas of the city resulting in traffic chaos.

According to the Delhi traffic control room, vehicular movement was affected due to water-logging at Ring Road, Rao Tula Ram, Moolchand underpass, beneath Indraprastha flyover, Appolo-Ashram road, Vasant Vihar-Vasant Kunj road, Wazirabad-Civil Lines road, Shahadra, Motibagh, near Loni crossing in east Delhi.

"There was water-logging all around due to which I remained stuck in the jam for over half an hour near Moolchand underpass," Kartik Kumar, a working professional, told IANS.
