A beach resort owner, on the run ever since a 25-year-old Russian woman accused him of rape, was arrested after he surrendered in a court on Wednesday.
A police spokesperson said accused James D'Souza was formally arrested after his surrender before a judicial magistrate in Pernem.
"We have arrested him. His police remand will be sought (from the court) on Thursday," the spokesperson said.
The woman had arrived in Goa in the last week of April and checked into the resort run by D'Souza at the beach village of Morjim, 30 km north of Panaji.
D'Souza allegedly raped the Russian woman on April 28 after entering her room by using a master key.
Russian consular officials and state Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar had criticised the police for its inability to arrest the accused.
Parulekar said on Tuesday that the rape and the shoddy police probe had shamed Goa.
