A timely detection of three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other arms and ammunition by the army late Saturday averted a major tragedy in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district.
"A search party of the army operating in the Warson area, five kilometres from Trehgam town (Kupwara), detected three IEDs in the hollow trunk of a tree along with other war-like stores in Gazrial Forest near Khazan Mati Ridge," a defence spokesman told IANS.
It resulted in the recovery of three IEDs, two weighing five kilogrammes and the third weighing a kilogramme along with three mortar bombs.
"Also, three UBGL grenades, 61 rounds of AK-47 and one Chinese pistol with magazine. The IEDs were kept in readiness to be used with complete circuitry were found," the official added.
