The National Human Rights Commission Wednesday sought a report from human resource development ministry over 18 Dalit students' suicide in country's elite educational institutions and discrimination against them in Patna University.
The commission issued notice to the secretary in the ministry on the basis of media reports alleging caste-based discrimination and violence in the hostel of Dalit students in Patna University early this year.
The commission had also received a complaint from NGO Navsarjan Trust of Ahmedabad, quoting media reports that 18 Dalit students committed suicide during the last four years in premier educational institutions of the country including.
"The secretary has been given four weeks time to respond," said an official of NHRC.
