The Maharashtra government on Saturday appointed seniormost IPS officer Satish C. Mathur as the new Director-General of Police, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K.P. Bakshi said here.

An officer of the 1981 IPS batch, Mathur was Additional DGP - Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) before his new appointment.

He will succeed Pravin Dixit and will take charge later on Saturday. Dixit is retiring after serving in the post since September 2015.

Among the earliest and first IPS officer to be trained by the National Security Guard, Mathur had a crucial stint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and also with Air India.

During his assignment with the CBI, Mathur was part of the team which prosecuted the 193 accused in the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

He helped develop an online system that allowed the court to access the prosecution's say and all the details of the accused with just a click of the mouse.

Mathur was also the first occupant of a new post, DGP-Legal and Technical, which was created to improve the conviction rate in Maharashtra.

He also held the post of Pune Commissioner of Police from March 2015 for about a year.

During his tenure in ACB, some high profile cases, including the multi-crore rupee irrigation department scams, came up.
