Ahead of India's Independence Day Thursday, police Wednesday beefed up security in and around the Taj Mahal.

Taj security officer Swarnjeet Kaur said security arrangements had been streamlined at and close to the 17th century monument.

"People have been told to be extra alert... Vehicles are being stopped and checked," the officer said.

Due to holidays, thousands of tourists are queuing up at all three entrance gates of the Taj. Police pickets have been posted at the rear of the monument.
