The Sensex slid below the 36,000 mark during the afternoon trade session on Tuesday, as it erased over 120 points from its previous close.
At 1.07 p.m., the S&P BSE Sensex traded 120.24 points or 0.33 per cent lower at 35,948.09, after touching an intra-day high of 36,224 and a low of 35,912.59.
The broader 50-scrip Nifty50 was down 39.20 points or 0.36 per cent and stood at 10,823.35.
Reality stocks gained close to 2 per cent while almost all sectors came under heavy selling pressure, led by BSE metal index.
The NSE Nifty Pharma and PSU Bank index were among the only sectoral indices in the green.
The Indian currency strengthened over 10 paise to 69.66 per dollar from its previous close of 69.77.
