The three-month extension granted to Uttar Pradesh's retiring director general of police (DGP) was Friday challenged in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court.
In a public interest litigation (PIL), local lawyer S.C. Shukla has claimed that the service extension of three months given to A.K. Jain had raised many doubts.
The case has been listed for April 7 for hearing.
Jain had been given a send-off on March 31 but got the extension the same evening, leaving many officials shocked. Many retired police chiefs of the state questioned the extension and said that this move by the Akhilesh Yadav government was setting a wrong precedent.
Becoming the state police chief to get an extension in service, Jain, a 1979 batch IPS officer, was appointed to the post on February 1 and his tenure only lasted a little over 60 days.
