The Haryana Police said on Monday that it has filed an FIR against seven people on charges of selling beef biryani.

The case was registered at Firozpur Jhirka station in Mewat against seven Meos (Muslims) for trading and selling biryani allegedly containing beef.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the seven accused are Vakil, Sazid, Hakim, Jamshed, Irshad, Faruk and Israil. While Israil is a resident of Rawal village near Firozpur, Jhirka the six other accused hail from Doha village.

The accused were booked under the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act, 2015 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act provide for imprisonment of up to 10 years in case of cow slaughter.

"Police on Monday submitted a copy of the FIR in the Punjab and Haryana High Court," Ravi Sharma, lawyer for the petitioner, told IANS.

Naresh Kadyan of the Animal Welfare board and a complainant approached the Firozpur Jhirka's Sub-Judicial Magistrate court and later moved the High Court as police refused to register a FIR.

Meat samples were collected from seven biryani traders in Mewat after a controversy erupted over beef being served by them in 2016.

Hisar's Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences clarified that the report sent by it of seven samples were of "cattle" which refers to "cow or oxen".
