Share the heritage at vintage car rally in capital

A fleet of vintage cars will take to the capital's roads on February 28 at The Statesman Vintage and Classic Car Rally, which is back with its 50th edition.

This year, the rally is themed 'Drive in and share the heritage', and it will witness young participants apart from vintage motorists from different parts of the country. It will be flagged off from The Statesman House on Barakhamba Road in New Delhi here, read a statement from the organisers.

Also, since some schools in the city will be joining the event as heritage partners, their students and other children will get an opportunity to ride select cars at the rally.

Last year, some 60 cars which participated in the rally were older than 1939, and 40-odd were from between 1940 and 1957.

Some of the regulars are possessions from the likes of the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Maharaja of Travancore. The jeep used for popular Bollywood song "Mere sapno ki rani" also continues to woo car lovers during the rally, year after year. A 1913 fire engine from Hyderabad is a regular and high attraction at the rally.

With digital campaigns this year, the effort is to engage youngsters and older generation alike for the event, and more spectators are expected to witness the rally, the organisers have said.

The closing ceremony will be held at the National Stadium near India Gate, and 44 trophies will be given out to the winners in various categories. A coffee table book will also be presented to the people.

Judging the state of health and vintage condition of the old beauties will be vintage car experts who will constitute the jury for the rally.
