At least six people were killed in an ambush that targeted Burundi's army chief when a group of gunmen attacked his vehicle on Friday.
The assassination attempt left three assailants and three soldiers dead, while Major General Prime Niyongabo survived the attack, EFE reported citing Iwacu news portal.
A patrol car that was passing near the site rushed immediately to the scene after hearing the shots and exchanged fire with the assailants.
The assassination attempt against Niyongabo is part of a long series of attacks targeting senior officials of the ruling party of the National Council for the Defence of Democracy and leading figures of the opposition in Burundi.
