In a pot shot at the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, the CPI-M on Tuesday said there was asomething fishy' about those seeking a "complete rollback" of the demonetisation exercise.

Asserting that the Communist Party of India-Marxist never demanded a reversal of the demonetisation exercise, its General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said: "We have urged the central government to allow circulation of the demonetised currency notes till there was adequate supply of new notes."

Banerjee has been the most belligerent opponent of the demonetisation move operationalised by the Narendra Modi government. She has time and again demanded a complete rollback of the exercise, arguing that it has landed the country in a financial emergency like situation causing untold hardship to the poorer sections of the society, particularly the rural population.

"We have never demanded a complete rollback of demonetisationa There is something fishy about those who are demanding a total rollback of demonetisation," Yechury said addressing a party rally at the Shahid Minar Maidan.

Ridiculing Modi's demonetisation move, he said: "All the three aims that the prime minister had highlighed - stopping circulation of black money, ending corruption and profusion of fake currrency - have failed."
