Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party on Thursday retained the Jangipur and Bilari assembly seats.

Kismat Devi was declared elected from Jangipur in Ghazipur district, defeating her nearest Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Kunwar Ramesh Singh by 22,092 votes.

Kismat Devi is the widow of Kailash Singh Yadav, whose death necessitated the by-election.

Mohammad Faheem won from Bilari in Moradabad district. The seat was won the last time by his father Haji Irfan, who too died. Faheem defeated BJP's Suresh Saini by about 7,000 votes.
