Tegucigalpa (Honduras), Sep 29 (IANS/EFE) Spain will contribute $1.2 million to a project that will create the National Network of Multimedia Centers for the socio-economic development of Honduras, according to an accord signed in this capital city.

Under the accord, the European country will contribute to the "socioeconomic development of Honduras through projects of this nature," reported Xinhua citing the trade attache of Spain in the Central American nation, Reyes Sallent.

The pact was signed by Sallent, Honduran Finance Minister Wilfredo Cerrato; the undersecretary of planning and foreign cooperation, Maria Puerto; and the vice president of the Central American Bank of Economic Integration, or BCIE, Alejandro Rodriguez, according to the sources.

Sallent said the basic purpose of the accord is "to make the biggest impact on Honduras's level of development," chiefly in the fields of education, environment and renewable energy.

Cooperation in financing the project comes as part of the Honduras Debt Conversion Program with Spain, Rodriguez said.

The project consists of creating three multimedia centres, which will "facilitate access to computer technology and communications for government institutions and companies in the country that need training and updating of their human resources," according to a BCIE communique.

The multimedia centres will be established at San Pedro Sula in the north, La Ceiba on the Caribbean, and Copan in western Honduras, the BCIE, the organisation that administers the financing provided by Spain for the development programme, said.
