Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday ordered the release of 54 Indian fishermen arrested for fishing in Sri Lankan waters, according to reports reaching here.
The Sri Lankan Navy arrested the 54 on Sunday.
G. Arun, a leader of a fishermen's association in Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, told IANS over telephone that the arrested fishermen were being let off.
Tamil Nadu is separated from Sri Lanka by a narrow strip of sea. Sri Lanka routinely arrests fishermen from India when they cross into and fish in Sri Lankan waters.
