Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday thanked BJP workers and supporters for the overwhelming mandate given by Uttar Pradesh to the party in the Lok Sabha election.

Addressing a huge crowd at the DLW grounds in the city, Modi said the Bharatiya Janata Party's victory as well as his own as a Lok Sabha candidate from Varanasi was due to the hard work of the party workers.

Attributing the stability at the Centre to the majority given to the BJP, Modi said this was possible only due to Uttar Pradesh.

"The people of Uttar Pradesh should get full credit for the stable government at the Centre," he said amid loud sloganeering and applause by supporters.

Modi said the world now has a new and positive opinion about India, and it was due to the BJP cadres participating in various initiatives taken by the new government like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

"If the people of Kashi (Varanasi) decide, can there be any filth in the city?" he asked the crowd, which replied in the negative.

Modi said he was indebted to the people of Varanasi and Uttar Pradesh, and reiterated that he would return their love and faith "with interest".

On the recent victories in the Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections, Modi said the same success will be repeated in Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir too.
