A second-year Master of Arts student of Jawaharlal Nehru University allegedly committed suicide here on Friday by hanging himself from a ceiling fan inside the campus, a police officer said.

The incident was reported to police at 12 p.m. after the deceased, Rishi Joshua Thomas, sent his suicide note to the professor of the English department.

"The professor immediately informed the in-charge of Mahi Mandvi hostel to check on him. Thomas stayed in Mahi Mandvi hostel in JNU campus," DCP Devender Arya said.

Thomas was later found hanging in a room located in the basement of the library, he said.

A student of M.A. second year of English language, Thomas was first seen by a boy who peeped in from a window and found him hanging from the fan.

"The door was forced open and the body was taken down by cutting the cable. A JNU doctor checked and declared him dead. The body has been shifted to Safdarjung Hospital. Relatives were informed and Thomas' cousin Mathew Vargese also reached JNU," the officer added.

"The deceased was undergoing some treatment. As per preliminary enquiry no foul play is suspected. Further investigation is underway," he added.
