A local court here on Saturday acquitted Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in a 17-year-old assault case.

Sukhbir Badal, also president of the ruling Akali Dal, was present in the court when Judicial Magistrate Satish Kumar pronounced the order on a case filed by journalist Naresh Sehgal on September 5, 1999, in Kotkapura town near here.

Sehgal had alleged that he was threatened by Sukhbir Badal, then contesting elections from Faridkot, and his supporters.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on June 30, 2006, ordered police to book eight accused, including Sukhbir, for assault.
