Tariq Mehboob, a leader of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), an Islamic political party, died of a cardiac arrest in Karachi Central Jail on Saturday, a media report said.
He was also the president of Anjuman-e-Nojawanan-e-Islam (ANI), a Karachi-based youth organisation. Jail authorities are making arrangements to transfer the body to Karachi's Jinnah Hospital for the formalities, ARY news reported.
An anti-terrorism court(ATC) in Karachi on Thursday ordered 90 days detention of Mehboob for his alleged involvement in extortion and harboring target killers.
Pakistan Rangers had apprehended Mehboob from Karachi's Water Pump locality.
A statement issued by the Rangers, however, said that Tariq Mehboob died in jail and not in Rangers' custody.
