The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the operation of a government notification that allowed Jallikattu or Pongal bull sports in Tamil Nadu.
The Supreme Court also issued notice to the Centre and Tamil Nadu government on petitions filed by various bodies against the lifting of the ban.
The pleas were filed by Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India and a Bangalore-based NGO.

According to a thewire.com report, the Centre has reportedly asked AWBI Chairman Maj General (retd) R M Kharb and Vice-Chairman Chinny Krishna to resign from their posts for challenging its notification.
