India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday paid homage at a memorial to soldiers of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) who died fighting in the civil war in Sri Lanka.
"Homage to the brave. Minister @SushmaSwaraj at the IPKF Memorial," external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted.
The IPKF was invited to Sri Lanka's north and east to enforce the India-Sri Lanka accord of 1987. Some 1,140 of them died fighting the civil war with the LTTE.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to lay a wreath at the IPKF memorial during his visit next week.
Sushma Swaraj also met a delegation of Buddhist leaders. She is here to hold talks and lay the ground for Modi's visit March 13-14.
