Suspended Shiromani Akali Dal leader Inderbir Singh Bolaria resigned as a Punjab legislator on Tuesday.
Bolaria, who represents the Amritsar-South assembly seat, sent his resignation to the Assembly Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal.
Giving reasons for his resignation, Bolaria said that he was feeling suffocated in the Akali Dal-run Punjab government.
He is likely to join the Congress on Tuesday.
Bolaria, who was first elected in 2008 (by-election) from the Amritsar South seat, was re-elected in the 2012 assembly polls. He was made Chief Parliamentary secretary (CPS) in the Punjab government earlier.
