The Congress on Tuesday said Subramanian Swamy has fallen prey to Bharatiya Janata Party's "jumlas and false promises".

On Swamy questioning Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's nationality, party spokesperson Tom Vadakkan said: "The prime minister goes to Britain and a report comes that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen. Tomorrow, whichever nation the NRI prime minister visits, we will hear he is the citizen of that nation."

"The 'Dirty Works Department', chaired by Dr. Swamy, has fallen prey to the jumlas (phrases) and promises made by the BJP and its prime minister."

Vadakkan said the BJP promised Swamy "the sky" -- the HRD ministry, the law ministry -- but did not deliver upon it "primarily because they feel that he will be a 'trouble maker' for the BJP". "So, they are trying to engage him in a campaign against the Nehru-Gandhi family and he specializes in it."

"But how long would these promises bring some relief to Dr. Swamy," the spokesperson asked.

The Congress party's reaction came after Swamy on Monday alleged that Rahul Gandhi had declared himself as a British national in the annual return of a company in Britain.

Stating that these 'dream merchants' have made Dr. Swamy believe that he is a minister-in-the-making, Vadakkan said: "Time is ripe that Dr. Swamy woke up. This is a 'wake-up' call for you. There is no delivery. You are not being made a minister and are being taken for a 'merry-go-round ride' by the BJP. It is time for you to think how you are being used by the BJP's 'Dirty Works Department'."
