System failure triggers delays at Sydney airport

Thousands of passengers faced delays on Monday following an air traffic control system failure at the Sydney airport, the media reported.

Dozens of flights were cancelled while many more were experiencing delays of more than two hours, reports the ABC News.

One pilot described the Harbour City's skies as being "like a ghost town" to air traffic control as he came in to land.

Air Services Australia (ASA) said there had been a "system software failure" at Sydney's air traffic control at 5 a.m.

As a result, only a limited number of flights were able to land and depart.

ASA said the glitch had now been resolved but the disruptions were expected to continue as they dealt with a massive backlog, reports the ABC News.

There were long queues at check-in and transfer desks.

Other airports in the country have also faced disruptions due to the glitch.

"If one airport sneezes the others will catch the cold because we're all interconnected," a Brisbane Airport Corporation spokesperson told the local media.
