Around 5.3 crore voters in Tamil Nadu would decide the fate of candidates contesting the 39 seats from the state in the Lok Sabha polls this year.
According to the final electoral rolls after Special Summary Revision, 2014, by the Election Commission of India, Tamil Nadu has 5.37 crore - 2.69 crore males, 2.68 crore females and 2,996 others (transgenders).
In a summary revision, the rolls are published as draft, without house-to-house enumeration, so that claims and objections can be invited. This draft of the rolls has been released after revisions were made, incorporating claims and objections, officials said.
According to a statement issued by the state Chief Electoral Officer here Friday, the net addition of new voters after the revision is 23.49 lakh.
The Election Commission said the total number of electors to total population is 71.24 percent. This is in line with the projected census ratio of 18-plus population to the total population, which is 71.16 percent.
The commission said there is a shortfall in the youth (18-19 age group) enrolment. The enrolment in this group is around 11.99 lakh, against an expected number of around 24.46 lakh.
The commission said efforts are being made to motivate this group to enroll.
The voter identity cards will be given to those who are newly enrolled at the polling booths on National Voter's Day, Jan 25.
The commission said the process of continuous revision of electoral rolls is on, and those who do not find their names on the rolls can apply directly or online.
