The month-long strike by over 400 workers at the Nano plant of Tata Motors in Gujarat was called off on Wednesday after a pact with the management. The workers will resume work on Thursday.

The workers and management reached a settlement over the issue of 26 suspended workers following the intervention of the state Labour Secretary at a meeting in capital Gandhinagar.

As agreed by both the parties, the company will reinstate 13 suspended workers while the remaining 13 will continue to get allowance (75 percent of their wages) till the probe into their conduct by an independent panel is concluded.

A decision on two workers suspended in December would be taken this month, said M.S. Patel, the Assistant Labour Commissioner of Ahmedabad.

As many as 422 permanent workers had gone on strike at Sanand from February 22 demanding the re-instatement of 28 suspended workers. Two workers were suspended on December 16 on grounds of indiscipline.

The workers union, named Bharatiya Kamdar Ekta Sangh Sanand (BKSS), was recognised by the labour department on March 17.

Tata Motors said the workmen "will call off the strike and restore normalcy and operate as per productivity, quality, discipline and safety requirements".
