Tension gripped the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar after a group of students clashed with police on Tuesday.
"A group of NIT students, all of them non-locals, marched to the gates of the institute shouting slogans," a police officer said.
"A senior police officer advised them not to go out of the campus as that could result in a law and order problem. The students refused to listen and some of them manhandled the officer," he said.
He said police resorted to a baton charge to disperse the students, in which seven of them sustained minor injuries and were given first aid inside the campus.
No one was hospitalised as the injuries were minor, the police officer added.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was deployed later in the night as a precautionary measure to prevent any escalation of tension, the officer said.
The NIT was closed by the authorities on March 31 following a row during the India-West Indies World T20 cricket match. The institute resumed normal functioning on Tuesday.
