The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Anurag Thakur is all set to be unanimously elected as the president in a special general meeting here on Sunday after Shashank Manohar stepped down from the post to take up the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman's job.
The 41-year-old, who is also a BJP Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, has got the backing of all the east zone members including Assam, Bengal, Tripura, Jharkhand and the National Cricket Club. He filed his nomination on Saturday.
A farewell dinner has been organised by the BCCI for the departing Manohar on Monday.
Manohar resigned from the BCCI top post on May 10 after a seven-month tenure and was then elected unopposed as the ICC chairman on May 12.
Manohar took over the post after the sudden death of the then BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya.
Thakur is all set to take over the reins from Manohar at a time when the cricket board is facing tough times following the Supreme Court's order to implement the Justice R.M. Lodha committee's recommendations.
Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) chief and business tycoon Ajay Shirke is said to be a top contender for the post of secretary which will fall vacant after Thakur's election as president.
