Thieves broke into a bank branch in Haryana's Sonipat district early on Thursday and decamped with demonetised currency worth over Rs 1.22 crore, police said.
The incident took place in a branch of the Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC).
"The thieves broke into the bank by breaking through the wall of the toilet. They used a gas cutter to open the safe. They took away Rs 1.22 crore in demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. Investigations and raids are in progress," a Haryana police official said.
The theft was noticed on Thursday morning when the bank opened for the day.
