A speeding BMW car, being driven by the son of a Rajasthan legislator, hit an auto rickshaw and a PCR van, killing three persons and injuring five here late on Friday night, police said.

The BMW was being driven by Siddharth Mehariya, son of an independent legislator, police claimed.

"The incident occurred at around 1.15-1.30 a.m. near Saint Xavier School when a speeding BMW car first hit an auto rickshaw in which four persons including the driver were travelling. Then it hit a PCR van. Three persons sitting in the auto rickshaw were killed while 5 others including at least three policemen were injured," a police official told IANS.

The persons in the BMW tried to run away from the spot, but policemen sitting in the PCR van caught one of them.

"We have arrested Siddharth under Section 304 of IPC (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) so far," police official said.

Siddharth, who denied that he was driving the car and that it was his driver who was at the steering wheel then, also said that the accident happened due to the fault of the auto rickshaw driver. He also said there were three persons in the car.

Police, on the other hand, claimed that there were only two persons in the car - Siddharth and one of his cousins.
