Years of Congress rule is responsible for corruption in India and it is time to "bid goodbye" to the party, BJP leader Narendra Modi said Wednesday.

"When Rajiv Gandhi was prime minister he said that for every rupee sent from Delhi, only 15 paisa reached the common man. This was when the Congress ruled the country from panchayats to parliament. Who was responsible for corruption then?" Modi asked at an election rally here.

Blaming the Congress for the cancer of corruption, the Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Modi urged voters to "bid goodbye" to the country's oldest political party.

"You have defeated the party here (assembly elections). Now it's time to bid goodbye to them at the centre," he said.
