Train derails after hitting elephant in north Bengal

A Siliguri-bound local train was derailed after it hit an elephant between Gulma and Sevoke stations near the northern West Bengal town on Monday evening, an official said. No injuries have been reported.

Northeast Frontier Railway area manager Parthay Sarothy Seal said the engine with two compartments was derailed following the impact. None of the passengers was injured. However, the injured pachyderm was lying at the spot.

After the incident, the train came to a halt.

Railway police and rail officials have rushed to the scene of the incident.
