A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded compensation of over Rs.37 lakh to the parents of an assistant professor of Delhi University who died in a road accident June 2013.
The tribunal directed State Bank of India General Insurance Company to pay a compensation of Rs.37,64,538 to the parents of 26-year-old Karamveer, killed in a road accident June 8, 2013.
Karamveer succumbed to injuries after his motorcycle was hit from behind by a rashly driven vehicle on Ring Road near Kashmere Gate.
The postmortem report said he had died of ante-mortem injuries that caused cranio cerebral damage and hemorrhagic shock.
"In view of the unrebutted testimony of the petitioners (parents) and documents available on record, it is prima facie proved that Karamveer died due to injuries suffered in the road accident caused due to rash and negligent driving," MACT Presiding Officer Dinesh Bhatt said in an order delivered Thursday, a copy of which was made available Monday.
The judge directed SBI General Insurance Company, with which the offending vehicle was insured, to pay the amount to the parents of the deceased.
Karamveer's parents told the court that their son was an assistant professor in Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, University of Delhi, earning Rs.46,261 per month.
Karamveer's parents placed documents related to an interview call letter for the post of lecturer in Rajasthan Public Service Commission addressed to their son, and said he had also received a call letter for selection as trainee scientist by the University Grants Commission. He had also been selected to serve as protocol assistant in parliament.
The tribunal made the award taking into consideration documents available on record showing that the deceased was highly qualified and had cleared various examinations.
