A 31-year-old tutor was shot dead by an unidentified assailant in north Delhi on Monday, a murder in which police is not ruling out a communal angle with the victim's family alleging that his Muslim girlfriend's brother's hand could be in it.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Aslam Khan said Ankit was shot dead inside his coaching centre, close to his residence, in Mahendra Park area in Jahangirpuri at about 8.30 a.m.

The assailant wore a pollution mask and entered the coaching centre before the victim arrived. Once Ankit was in, he shot him on his head from behind in close range, the official said.

"The motive is not clear but the victim's family has alleged that it might be because of a girl with whom he was in a relationship," Khan said.

"We are still investigating the matter to verify whether the claims made by his family are true," she said, adding that Ankit's girlfriend's family members were being questioned.

The victim had known the girl, his neighbour, for the past 10 years.

Khan said all angles, including personal enmity, were being probed.

Meanwhile, the boy's sister Archana Singh, alleged that either the brother of the girl killed Ankit or got him killed.

Police have formed 10 teams to nab the killer. "We are interrogating all the suspects," the DCP said.
