Two people have been arrested for cheating passengers without confirmed tickets by offering them help of their relative in railway department and stealing their baggage, police said Friday.

Ramanand Mehto, 22, and Ranjeet, 25, both resident of Bihar, were arrested Tuesday from Anand Vihar Railway Station in east Delhi while running away with the belongings of a passenger.

Police said the two men would visit railway stations and target the passengers with bags and valuables.

"The accused would ask the victims about their destination of journey and become friendly with them. They would also spend time with passengers, sitting on platforms on the pretext of waiting for the train," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railway) Sanjeev Bhatia said.

"They would tell the victims that they were also going to the same destination and mention that their brother-in-law was a ticket checker in railway department, who could provide them the reserved seats," said the official.

"After that," the official said, "one of the accused would take the passenger to meet the ticket checker and the co-accused would steal the belongings of the victim and vanish."

"During the interrogation, they confessed they have committed several such crimes," the official added.
