Two Indian workers were buried alive in the trench of a sewage system project where they were working in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Ram Kumar, 35, and Selvaraj, 28, were buried alive around 3.45 p.m in the Al Zaafaraniya area of Al Ain, the second largest city in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, local media reported Wednesday.

According to the report, the sand on both sides of the eight-metre deep trench collapsed while the two were trying to fix a pipe. Their bodies were later recovered.

Three other workers and a foreman escaped as they had left the site for afternoon prayers.

Police were reportedly questioning the supervisor of the group.
