Two tourists drowned while bathing in the Bay of Bengal in West Bengal's East Midnapore district on Sunday, the police said.
The incident took place in the sea resort of Mandarmani.
"Subham Agarwal and Mahesh Baishya, both in their early 20s, got swept away by the tidal waves while bathing in the sea," a police official said.
According to him, three friends from Howrah district's Golabari region reached Mandarmani on Sunday morning.
While the other friend waited at the shore, the two decided to bathe in spite of the high tide at that time.
"A fishermen jumped into the sea and brought out Agarwal. But he was declared dead at a local hospital. The lifeless body of Baishya was found later," the officer added.
