The Security Council on Wednesday condemned "the heinous and cowardly terrorist attacks" carried out by the Taliban in various provinces of Afghanistan.

Suicide bombers and gunmen targeted police and government facilities in Paktia, Ghazni and Farah provinces on Tuesday, killing more than 70 people and wounding over 200 others.

In a press statement, the members of the Security Council condemned the attacks "in the strongest terms" and expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Afghan government.

They underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice and urged all states to cooperate actively with the Afghan government and all other relevant authorities in this regard.

They reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed. They reaffirmed the need for all states to combat threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.
